When is testing for incoming freshmen?

Incoming freshmen are tested in reading, writing and mathematics in order to place them in the class that will be the best fit for them. Testing takes place on four evenings in May and June. Students need only attend one night, or if necessary can schedule an individual appointment. Please check the calendar for specific dates.

When is new student orientation?

Freshman student and parent orientation and transfer student and parent orientation both occur in August. Please check the school calendar for specific dates. The freshmen lock-in is held the same evening as their orientation.

How do I pay tuition?

Tuition can be paid with cash or check by mailing or delivering it to the school office. Electronic fund transfer can also be set up with the proper form from the school office.

What supplies do I need for each class?

Where can I find the dress code?

The dress code is available in the Student Handbook.

How do I purchase lunch tickets?

Lunch tickets can be pre-purchased at freshmen orientation before the school year starts. During the school year, lunch tickets are available in the cafeteria before school each morning. Lunches can also be purchased with cash.

What and when are Service Days?

Service Days are school days set aside twice a year for students to interact with and serve the community. Students participate in Service Days with their family groups, which are groups of about 18 students, under the supervision of a faculty member. Family groups plan, organize and carry out service projects together. For Service Days dates, check the school calendar.

Does Valley Lutheran offer drivers education classes?

Mr. R’s A+ Driving School offers classes at Valley Lutheran High School during the school year and throughout the summer. This is not a formal Valley Lutheran program but is offered as a convenience to our families. How can I stay current on Valley Lutheran events?

To stay current on Valley Lutheran events, you can access the school calendar. The Daily Announcements (available every day on the website) and the Parent Newsletter (emailed every two weeks) also include information about school events and activities.


Are there Lutheran schools where younger children can attend before going to Valley Lutheran?

Yes, there are many in the Great Lakes Bay Region! Find one near you.

What is the protocol for my student taking medication while at school?

Medicine protocols can be found in the Student Handbook.

How do I notify the school if my student is going to be absent or late, or needs to leave school early?

Please call or email the office before 9 a.m. on the day of the absence. Students who must leave early or who are late due to an appointment must inform the office either by a phone call or note from the parent/guardian.

How can parents be involved with the school?

The Booster Club (music, drama and athletics) and the Parent Organization (academic program) provide a great deal of support for the school and provide parents the opportunity to be involved. Other volunteer opportunities are also available.


When are sports tryouts?

For sports team tryouts, watch the Parent Newsletter and check the school calendar, or call the school office at (989) 790-1676 for specific information.

Is there pre-season training for athletic teams? If so, when?

Pre-season or off-season training is organized by each coach. It is best to contact each coach directly to determine a team’s training plan.

When are band auditions?

Auditions for Symphonic Band are held on the incoming freshmen testing nights by appointment only. Contact band director Rebecca Sugden at to set up an appointment or for more information. Participation in Valley Lutheran’s Wind Ensemble does not require an audition.
