Scripture
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:6–7
Insight
Guess what? We are not in control. Oh, we convinced ourselves that we were; we were sure our lives — even our success — was in large part, our own doing. Certainly, from time to time, we acknowledged God’s blessings in our lives; but on the whole, we were pretty self sufficient. But that was a different time. It seems like a long time ago. Now, we’ve come face-to-face with this reality: We were never in control! When we humble ourselves before God, we’re really acknowledging this truth, and then it’s a whole lot easier to take Him up on His offer to “cast all our anxiety on Him.” We also acknowledge that if we are not in control, then He is! And His plan is to lift us out of this mire, because of His great love for us. Go ahead. Take Him up on this incredible offer!
Prayer
HEAVENLY FATHER, we acknowledge your great love for us, and that your plan for us will get us out of this mess. Thank you for that love and your offer to take away our anxiety. It’s too heavy for us — we can’t keep dragging those worries along with us. We also acknowledge that we are totally dependent on you, a dependence that trades our weakness for your strength, our anxiety for your Hope, and our struggles with your plan for us. As we continue to walk this path, give us all that we need, day by day, to serve you and to serve others. Protect us and bless us as we do. AMEN.
