Scripture
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” — Matthew 11:28-29
Insight
Are you weary? Does your soul need a rest? Even in “normal” times, life can bring us to that place. And in the “abnormal” times we likely all are worn out and worried, and our souls ache for renewal. God knew there would be times like this in everyone’s lives, so His son offered this beautiful invitation. We need to “come to him,” and He promises to “give us rest.” That’s not a bad deal; we hardly have to do anything. Come to God — and rest awaits. With a gentleness and humility of heart, we’re renewed in our soul. We could all use that today.
Prayer
Father in Heaven,
Here we come, wanting to take you up on your amazing invitation as you greet us with the promise of rest for our souls. We are weary, God. We are tired. We are worried. Thank you for your love for us and the promise to provide all that we need — including rest and renewal. You know we need this. In fact you knew it long before we were ready to admit it. That’s why you made this promise all those years ago — because you knew that today, this day, in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, we were going to come to you in need of rest. We claim it for ourselves so that we might be renewed to serve your people, who you love, and we do, too.
Bless us with this promised renewal.
Amen.
