For 20 years Coach Kurt Hofmeister has led Valley Lutheran High School’s baseball program, yet his impact extends far beyond just the action on the diamond. Known for his love for the game of baseball and a passion for teaching, Coach Hofmeister uses baseball to instill values of faith, humility, and teamwork in his players. Last season, on April 19, 2024, his 300th win was not only a celebration of his coaching success but also a testament to his character and the lives he’s touched.

From the start, Coach Hofmeister has prioritized developing exemplary young men. He views baseball as more than just a sport—it’s a way to teach discipline, responsibility, and resilience. While victories are important, his focus has always been on fostering character and faith in his players. Over the years, his influence has shaped generations of young men both on and off the field.

Humble Leadership and Passion for the Game

Players describe Coach Hofmeister as a servant-leader who fosters a strong team culture by investing in each player as an individual. “He doesn’t want accolades or glory, he just wants to teach, be a team, and win some baseball games. Coach stresses that everyone is part of the team and has an important role to play in the team’s success,” Luke Sowatsky (VL ‘24 and captain for his senior year) shared.

This humble leadership has been the foundation of Hofmeister’s coaching style. He’s always the first to arrive and the last to leave, putting in countless hours to ensure his team – and the immaculate field – is prepared. By emphasizing the importance of each player’s individual role, he creates a sense of unity and responsibility among his team. Under his leadership, the team has won 4 conference titles (including back-to-back conference titles in 2023 and 2024) and three district titles – and Coach Hofmeister works hard to ensure every player knows they contribute to those victories.

Faith at the Core of His Coaching

Faith is at the heart of Coach Hofmeister’s coaching philosophy. He uses the game to point to Jesus, and demonstrates through his actions the values he hopes to impart. His deep commitment to faith is evident in the way he leads—with kindness, integrity, and compassion. His players understand that, for Coach Hofmeister, baseball is as much about developing good men as it is about winning games.

Former players often credit him for shaping their character, sharing stories of how his lessons in faith and leadership have stayed with them long after they’ve left the field. His influence reaches beyond the team, positively impacting the school and broader community. For Coach Hofmeister, building young men of character is his greatest success.

The 300th Win: A Moment to Remember

Coach Hofmeister’s 300th win was more than just a number. The energy within the team was palpable as the players, fans, and the Valley community celebrated the milestone. True to form, Hofmeister downplayed his role in the achievement, praising the team’s hard work and dedication and using the milestone as an opportunity to bless someone else. The team held a “$300 for 300 wins,” gathering donations amongst the players to help an Assistant Coach’s family raise money for a transport van. “It was something we thought would be close to Coach Hof’s heart,” reflects Sowatsky.

As Coach Hofmeister looks to the future, his goals remain the same: to lead with humility, invest in his players, and instill values that last a lifetime. His 300th win is just one chapter in a greater story of faith, leadership, and service… and to God be the glory.

Thank you Coach Hofmeister – for all that you do to invest in our student athletes and all the ways you live out the mission of VLHS. We are thankful for you!!
