VL Mourns Loss of Miss Bev Feldkamp

The Valley Lutheran family mourns the loss of Miss Bev Feldkamp who passed away early this morning, December 22, after a short battle with cancer.

Miss Feldkamp began teaching Social Studies and Latin at Valley Lutheran in 1980 after graduating from Valparaiso University. Her high expectations for her students were paired with equally high expectations for herself, which were evident in the cookies and pizza rolls she baked for her classes after making “mistakes.” It was Miss Feldkamp who initiated the tradition of students helping others in our community through the “Christmas Family” drive, something that she led again this Christmas.

Miss Feldkamp’s teaching excellence was recognized well beyond our walls. She was a regular presenter at conferences, including those of the Michigan Council for Social Studies, National Council of Geographic Education, Michigan Association of Non-Public Schools, and the Lutheran Education Association. The United States Department of State selected her to study and teach in Ghana as a participant in the Teachers for Global Classrooms Program. The National Council of Geographic Education named her the National High School Distinguished Teacher in 2009.

After school, she was as much engaged with her students as during classes, serving as Yearbook Advisor for more than 30 years along with stints as Quiz Bowl Coach, class advisor, and Key Club advisor.

Her concern for the faith of her “kids” was her motivation. As a final testament of that concern she shared the news of her illness with the students in a special chapel. There, she confessed her faith and hope in Jesus, shared the peace that she felt in spite of her circumstances, and thanked the students, faculty, and staff for being her family. Her chapel message is shared on the Valley Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ValleyLutheranSaginaw/with the permission of her family.

We extend our sympathies to her friends and family, especially her son, Josh, daughter-in-law, Tiffany, and granddaughters, Olivia and Piper, as well as her father, Ralph, and siblings, Beth, Gretchen, Carol, and John, and their families.

The family informed us that a memorial service will be held after Christmas vacation. Wakeman Funeral Home is making the arrangements and more information will be available on their website. http://www.wakemanfuneralhome.com/
