"I Have Seen the Lord!"

Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her. (John 20:18)

The first person to see the risen Jesus on Easter morning was neither Peter, James nor John; in fact, it was none of the apostles. It was Mary Magdalene. A woman out of whom Jesus had driven seven spirits (Mark 16:9), and who is thought to have been involved in other serious sins.

She was not the only “sinner” to see Jesus that day. Peter, who infamously denied Jesus, and James and John , who quarreled over status in Jesus kingdom, would later see Jesus as well.

The message is simple: Jesus died and rose for sinners like Mary Magdalene, Peter, James, John, you and me. God bless your Easter celebrations with resurrection joy knowing your sins have been paid for, and eternal life is yours. And then, like Mary Magdalene, proclaim “I have seen the Lord!”, so others might know that joy as well.
