VL Senior Claire Neumann is only the second Charger in VL history to be named among the 120 finalists for the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s Scholar-Athlete Awards.
Claire was selected out of a total of 1,607 applicants for the 2023-24 school year, each of whom must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale), previously have won a varsity letter in at least one sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament.
In addition, applicants were asked to respond to a series of short essay questions, submit two letters of recommendation, and complete a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.
While Claire did not advance to the scholarship round, this recognition is significant and points to the great student athlete Claire has been during her high school years.
“Claire personifies what VL is proud to see in our student athletes. She works hard in the classroom as well as on the center stage of athletic competition. In addition to striving to always put herself in a position for success, she constantly goes above and beyond to have success with her teammates,” said VL Athletic Director Tyler Yahn.
Claire will head to Grand Valley State University next year to run track.
