VL Junior Marge Shaw recently participated in the HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America/Future Health Professionals) regional competition in the area of Home Health Aide. The competition was held virtually and included two parts: a written test, and the creation of a student-produced video demonstrating a given skill (in this case, taking a tympanic temperature).
Marge placed 4th in the region, narrowly missing the top 3 cut-off to advance to the state competition. Marge remarked, “I really liked participating in HOSA. I was able to show off what I have been working on and learning. I liked it being online [this year] because I had a lot of support right in the room with me as I made the video.”
Marge’s preparation for this event came primarily through her Nursing Assistant program at the Bay Arena ISD Career Center. Marge is one of a record 35 Valley students who chose this year to pair their Valley education with career/technical programs at an area career center.
“We are blessed to partner with our local career centers, and Marge has certainly taken advantage of every opportunity provided to her at the Bay Career Center,” said Mrs. Lindsay Mueller, school counselor. “For Marge to be recognized at such a high level as a junior speaks to her dedication and love of the nursing occupation.”
